There’s one-to-one appointments available to book every week day either online or on campus (and sometimes both). Timeslots are 20 mins in duration.

Guidelines for HSK Academic Skills Service one-to-one appointments

What to Expect:

  • One-on-one academic support for general study skills (up to 20 minutes).
  • Maximum 3 appointments per student per academic year; exceptions for students with Study Needs Agreements (SNA).
  • Possible feedback on up to 2 paragraphs (max 500 words) of an essay, where relevant.
  • Support for study skills, including assignment planning, essay structure, referencing, time management, revision, revision tips and study skills.
  • Support for learning, but no guarantee of assessment success.

 

What not to expect:

  • Specialised subject expertise or evaluation of content quality.
  • Proofreading services, including reference checks (e.g., we will not check for spelling mistakes for incorrect issue numbers for journals).
  • Predictions on assessment pass or fail.

Our expectations from you:

 

  • Check your schedule before booking an appointment to ensure that you can attend.
  • Be punctual; late arrivals reduce appointment time.
  • Ensure you know how to access your appointment in advance; check your university email for information from the SSAS Team – if this has not been received, contact the SSAS team at least 24 working hours in advance.
  • Log in using your university account for online appointments.
  • Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Please note - if you don’t cancel, this counts as a ‘strike’ - after three strikes you will not be able to book any further appointments.
  • Appointments are max 20 minutes; when preparing for the appointment make sure you focus on your priorities so that we can help you most effectively within this timeframe.
  • If seeking feedback on previous assessments, review feedback and identify one or two areas to focus on during the appointment.
  • You are expected to make your own notes during the appointment.

LRC Academic Skills Drop-in (10-5 every weekday)

Speak to one of the Herts Academic Skills (HAS) experts about your assignment planning, academic English development, writing or any other element of academic skills. They are located on the orange chairs in the Study Success Hubs in both LRCs.
